Manitou is rich in Native American culture, and steeped in the colorful past of
westward expansion. Today Manitou Springs is home to a thriving art community
with many local artists displaying their works in galleries and stores in the downtown
area.
Be sure not to miss the natural springs scattered about town. Most have been renovated
and are safe to drink. In fact many swear by the curative powers of Manitou's springs.
Shopping
Manitou largely survives on summer shopping
activity. As a result, there are a wide range of specialty items available for purchase
along our charming streets. A stores and shops page is in our plans and will give
you a feel for the large variety of businesses along Manitou, Canon, Ruxton, and

Campgrounds
Ahh, the beauty of campgrounds. Fresh mountain air, kids fishing
in the creek, a hot shower at a reasonable place. They fill up fast in Manitou in
the summer. Our chamber of commerce does a good job of listing all the campgrounds
in the area, so
just click here to get to their list. Maybe we'll go take some pictures
to show you one of these days. Most of the campgrounds in Manitou are RV/Tent grounds
near a stream. Very nice camping.
Art
Manitou Springs began attracting prominent painters,
photographers, crafts folks and writers as early as the mid-1800's. Many artists
and craftspeople were associated with the Craftwood Arts & Crafts Studio founded
in 1906.
The Commonwheel Artists Cooperative was
founded in 1974, making it one of the longest running Colorado Art Co-ops. Throughout
the year, Commonwheel offers an ambitious schedule of one-person, group, and theme
exhibitions including the very popular annual Labor Day Art and Craft Fair.
In the 1980's the Business of Art Center (BAC)
opened to assist artists to gain entrepreneurial skills necessary to thrive in a
career as a professional artist. Be sure to visit when you are in town.
The Manitou Art Theater at 515 Manitou
Ave. presents original theater and offers two series of original, professional theater
for audiences of all ages.
