If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.

– Henry David Thoreau, From “Walden.”

In 2005 Manitou Springs Real Estate began sponsoring The Different Drummer Scholarship.

The idea of the scholarship was born out of one of our agents’ experience in an education system that seemed to overlook those who are talented in non-traditional, non-academic ways.

The Different Drummer Scholarship is a one-time $2000 gift intended for one Manitou Springs High School (or home schooled or local Manitou resident) graduate each year who has a particular passion, but who doesn’t necessarily fit into the “typical” scholarship profile. It will be awarded to a student who has a dream, goal, or passion and exhibits focus and ambition toward meeting the goal or fulfilling the dream or passion. The scholarship can be used for anything that will help the student accomplish this: college or trade school expenses, private tutoring, special lessons, books, supplies, equipment, tools, or anything else that is a legitimate means to that end. Each scholarship will be customized to that year’s recipient. No preference will be given based upon gender, religion, race, handicap, family status, sexual orientation, or ethnicity. Preference will be given to applicants having less financial resources at their disposal and/or who would not otherwise receive a scholarship.

Application Form

Criteria: NO GPA, transcript, class ranking, school activities, club memberships, or school offices held will be considered in the application. Application Packet should include:

  1. An essay explaining what the student’s passion is and how he/she proposes to use the scholarship.
  2. In addition, the student must submit a work of art, a song, a video, project, or in some other way, give an example of his/her passion.
  3. Two reference letters must be submitted; one from a teacher and one from someone else who is significant in the applicant’s life (but not a teacher).
  4. An informal personal interview with the applicant may be requested.

Scholarship Award: The scholarship recipient’s name will be published in the local media and at least part of the money will be awarded on or before the first day of September following graduation. Because each scholarship is unique, the disbursement will be tailored to each recipient’s needs.

Deadline: All applications must be submitted by April 22, 2017.

If you wish to apply for this scholarship, please fill out the application form by the above deadline and submit it (along with the supporting documentation) to Manitou Springs Real Estate, 727 Manitou Avenue, Manitou Springs, Colorado 80829; or fax to 719-685-3383; or email to sara@manitousprings.com.
